Cautions for Use
• Update Snapmaker Orca to V2.3.6 or later and select the built-in “Snapmaker PLA Full Spectrum” profile
• Use hotends of 0.4 mm or smaller with a layer height of 0.1 mm or lower
• Keep the filament away from direct sunlight in a sealed container with desiccant when not in use

• Other printers: The Full Spectrum color mixing feature may not be supported by all printers and requires compatible printer hardware and slicing software. The filaments themselves are compatible with most FDM 3D printers, though manual parameter tuning may be required

Traditional multi-color printing is typically limited to the colors of the loaded spools. The PLA Full Spectrum Filament Bundle is specifically designed for layered color mixing with Snapmaker Orca’s Full Spectrum feature. As the four filaments alternate along the Z-axis, the colors visually blend as light passes through the thin layers—allowing a single print to go beyond four fixed colors and explore a broader palette.

How Layered Color Mixing Works

Each blended color shown is created by alternating two colors, with each accounting for 50% of the printed layers.

Adding Gray layers reduces the brightness and saturation of the original color, creating a darker, more muted tone.

1. Full Spectrum is designed to explore richer color variations, not for high-accuracy color reproduction. Color mixing is not precise color matching and cannot reproduce every target color. Final colors vary depending on filament color and transmission distance, model geometry, slicing settings, layer height, toolpaths, and other factors.

2. The software preview is intended only to indicate color trends and help fine-tune settings. The final print may differ from the preview due to filament properties and printing conditions. Before the final print, print a small color swatch with your current settings and fine-tune them based on the result.

3. Color mixing works best on models with sufficient volume or surface area. The effect may be less visible on small models, while fragmented surfaces or dense details may weaken the color-mixing effect. Such models are therefore not recommended.

4. Full Spectrum color mixing delivers better color results on three-dimensional models and is not recommended for flat models.

5. Mixing two to three filaments typically produces cleaner, more controllable colors, while mixing four may result in darker or grayer tones. Choose based on your desired effect, and use four-filament mixing with caution if you wish to avoid darker or grayer colors.

Printing Tips

Drying & Storage

• Pre-Drying: The filament has low moisture sensitivity and generally does not require drying. However, pre-drying is recommended for optimal print results. The recommended setting is 55°C for 6 hours.
• Storage: When not in use, store the filament in a dry place away from direct sunlight to maintain consistent print quality.

Printing

• Update the Software: Update Snapmaker Orca to V2.3.6 or later and select the built-in “Snapmaker PLA Full Spectrum” profile to use the color-mixing feature and achieve better print results.
• Refer to the Full Spectrum Guide and Color Reference: Refer to Full Spectrum for detailed instructions, or view the Full Spectrum Color Reference for color examples with corresponding filament combinations and mixing ratios.
• Use the Recommended Nozzle and Layer Height: Use hotends of 0.4 mm or smaller with a layer height of 0.1 mm or lower. Larger hotends and higher layer heights may result in visible horizontal stripes.

2. What is the PLA Full Spectrum Filament Bundle?

The PLA Full Spectrum Filament Bundle is a four-filament set specially designed for the Full Spectrum feature on the Snapmaker U1, with Snapmaker Orca providing the slicing and print settings.

Instead of being limited to the colors of the loaded filaments, Full Spectrum uses different filament colors across printed layers. Light passing through the thin layers creates a visual color-blending effect, allowing four filaments to produce a broader range of perceived colors.

3. How does Full Spectrum color mixing work?

Full Spectrum color mixing uses the optical properties of the filaments and layered printing to create blended colors.
For example:
Cyan + Yellow ≈ Deep Green
Magenta + Yellow ≈ Brick Red
Cyan + Magenta ≈ Muted Purple
Any Color + Gray ≈ Darker, More Muted Tone
Each blended color described above is based on two colors, with each color accounting for approximately 50% of the printed layers. Adjusting the layer ratio between the two colors can produce different blended colors and tones.

These blended colors are created by alternating different filament colors across printed layers. The final appearance depends on factors such as filament colors, Transmission Distance (TD), layer height, model geometry, and slicing settings.

 

4. What colors can I create with Full Spectrum?

The four filaments can be combined in different proportions and layer sequences to create a much broader visual palette than the four loaded colors alone.
However, Full Spectrum cannot reproduce every possible color and is not designed for high-accuracy color reproduction or professional color matching.
Layered color mixing also cannot produce pure white or pure black. Any white or black areas shown in Full Spectrum print examples are printed using other filaments, such as SnapSpeed PLA, rather than being produced through color mixing.
In general, mixing two to three filaments produces cleaner and more controllable colors. Mixing four filaments may produce darker or grayer tones and is therefore less suitable when you want bright or highly saturated colors.

5. Can I use Full Spectrum for flat or 2D models?

Full Spectrum color mixing works better on three-dimensional models and is not recommended for flat models or 2D-style artwork.
The layered optical mixing effect is less effective when there is insufficient model thickness or volume. Small, fragmented, or highly detailed models may also produce less noticeable color-mixing effects.

6. Will the final print exactly match the color shown in Snapmaker Orca?

Not necessarily. The software preview is intended to show color trends and help you fine-tune your settings. The final printed color may differ because of filament properties and actual printing conditions.
Factors that can affect the final color include:
• Filament color and Transmission Distance (TD)
• Mixing ratio
• Layer height
• Model geometry
• Toolpaths
• Printing parameters

For important prints, we recommend printing a small color swatch with your current settings first to verify that the resulting blended colors meet your expectations before printing the final model.

7. Which version of Snapmaker Orca do I need?

Update Snapmaker Orca to V2.3.6 or later and select the built-in Snapmaker PLA Full Spectrum filament profile.

8. What mixing modes are available in Snapmaker Orca?

Snapmaker Orca provides four Full Spectrum color-mixing modes:
Ratio Mode: Adjust filament proportions to explore different blended colors.

10. Why do I see horizontal stripes or zebra-like patterns in my print?

Subtle horizontal stripes or zebra-like patterns can naturally occur with Full Spectrum color mixing. Their visibility depends on factors such as layer height, nozzle size, and mixing ratio. When the mixing ratio between two colors differs significantly, the stripes may be more noticeable. For example, a 90% yellow + 10% cyan mix may show more visible stripes, while a 50% yellow + 50% cyan mix can produce a more uniform appearance with minimal visible layer lines.
For better color-mixing results:
• Use a 0.4 mm or smaller nozzle.
• Use a layer height of 0.1 mm or lower.
• Use the built-in Snapmaker PLA Full Spectrum profile.
• Fine-tune the mixing settings based on a small test print to confirm that the resulting blended colors and appearance meet your expectations.

11. Do I need any special accessories to use the Full Spectrum Bundle?

No special accessories are required for the basic Full Spectrum workflow on the Snapmaker U1.
For the best results, use the recommended Snapmaker Orca profile and printing parameters.

12. Why are the four filaments sold as a bundle?

The four filaments are carefully selected and fine-tuned for Full Spectrum color mixing, including their colors and TD values. This optimized combination is designed to:
• Produce a wider range of blended colors compared with using randomly selected filament colors.
• Reduce the visibility of horizontal stripes and create smoother, more natural-looking color transitions.
The bundle provides a consistent set of optimized colors, so you can achieve more predictable and visually pleasing mixing results without having to select and fine-tune individual filaments yourself.

13. Can the four filaments replace buying many individual colors?

However, the bundle does not replace every individual filament color, especially when you need a specific solid color or precise color reproduction.

14. How much filament is included in the bundle?

The bundle contains four 1 kg spools of filament. The filament diameter is 1.75 mm, with a diameter tolerance of ±0.02 mm.
